Where can I see one put up?

We try to have regular viewings in Auckland so contact us and we will let you know when the next one is. Also we have an extensive network of customers and can try to locate one near you, just bear in mind this can be a bit tricky if the tents are privately owned.

We have customers all over New Zealand and Australia so contact us and we'll try and locate a Lotus Belle near you!

What is the availability of the tents?

Unless it say's "sold out" we have tents in stock now. We do tend to sell out by around Christmas time though so its good to order early to avoid disappointment. If the model you want is unavailable please email us info@lotusbelle.co.nz as we may be able to locate one form our Australian store.

What are the measurements?

The 4m tent is 4m diameter and 4.5 at it's widest point (waist level). It's total height is 3m high and 1.46m floor to top of walls. The two windows measure 80 x 70 cms each and the door 1.5m high x 1m wide. The door is 1.5m x 1.08m wide. The 4 foot tent weighs 56 kgs approx and when it is packed up in its bag measures 1.13m x .40cm x .40cm

The ideal approximate area including the guy lines for the 4m tent is 49 m² (you can adjust the toggles inwards to take up less space)

The floor area of the 4m tent is 4m by 4m which is 12.57 m²

The 5m tent is 5m in floor diameter, 5.5m at its widest point and slightly taller at 3.2m high and 1.46m floor to top of walls. The door and windows are the same dimensions as above. The 16 foot tent weighs 69kgs and when it is packed up in its bag measures 1.3m  x .40cm x .40cm

The floor area of the 5m tent is 5m by 5m which is 19.63 m²

4m tents can fit up to 4 standard size single beds and 5m tents up to 6 standard size singles. You can even fit a queen size bed in a 4m if its propped up as the 4m tent is 4.5m at its widest point

Is it waterproof and what about mould and mildew?

Absolutely! We've tested the tent in many conditions and heavy showers and inside is dry as a bone. After extensive weathering we recommend treating your tent with a suitable product to help keep it mildew free and re-waterproof. This all part of owning a canvas tent, maintaining it especially if its been up longterm (one or more months) Also really important to take precautions like never packing away your tent wet and make sure the canvas shutters are down when drying it so there is no damp build-up. The tent canvas is treated to make it mould, mildew, rot and fire resistant. Contact us for some suggestions on caring for your product as we've tried many methods.

Here's a good testimonial from a customer who had their tent up long-term:

We had our Lotus Belle tent up one whole year. It worked out wonderfully, except for a few signs of mildew, which can be expected after having it up so long.  We remedied this with Lotus Belle's suggestion of clove oil and water, which worked a treat! I used the tent as a spare room for our kids and their friends and the whole neighbourhood thought it was awesome in every way!"

Remember that new canvas tents will need some weathering and when first exposed to rain as the fibres need to adjust and expand. So you may experience damp and sometimes a few leaks inside when first exposed to water, but this only lasts 1-2 exposures so don't panic! It always remedies itself. But if you are expecting guests its a good idea to hose the tent down and it it a good wet down and dry out before furnishing.

How does it perform in wind?

Really well. The tent has 10 supporting poles and multiple guy ropes to keep it well anchored, a good idea is to slacken these in storms to let the tent move. We left it up recently during a 100 kph storm and the tent was fine. It's not recommended you do this all the time. Any strong weather conditions are not good for your tent. Please exercise due diligence. If there are weather warnings set in place for your area, take your tent down.

How much space will I need to pitch it?

Ideally you'll have about 7m diameter space to put up the tent, but it can be smaller if you adjust the toggles inwards, around 6m minimum. It's ideally used in fields or large gardens, at festivals or large open spaces like farms and lifestyle blocks.

What's the groundsheet made of?

If you check the gallery section of our website you'll see our 550gsm PVC groundsheet. It's super thick and waterproof and the same durable material they make kayaks out of so we know it performs well! We often photograph the tents with carpets inside which we get made to order, this adds comfort and looks great, but it is an optional extra. Many customers get platforms made for the tents if they are up long term you can see pics of the platforms here on Pinterest.

What's the tent made of?

We have worked hard to manufacture an excellent quality canvas which is 380 gsm in thickness, much thicker than standard canvas tents on the New Zealand market. It’s a 60/40 polycotton mix.  Its treated with a non-toxic fire retardant and rot/mould resistent spray to meet the standards required. The centre pole is wood as are the wooden toggles, all great quality and beautifully made. The supporting poles fold down into 3 parts and are metal.

We have our tents manufactured in China by a great team of Mongolian and Chinese yurt makers. All our tents are ethically produced. Happy people make happy tents!

Will it fit in the boot of my car?

Yes! Woohoo, hurrah, finally, an almost-yurt that you can actually travel in a normal size car with! It folds up and fits in to two bags, each measuring 120cm x 40cm x 40cm max. So there's even room for your sleeping bag (and perhaps some clothes too if you're lucky).

Can I fit a burner flue in it/ does it come with a flue hole?

Yes you can fit a burner and no, it doesn't come with a flue hole - but its easy to make one yourself with the addition of the plates provided with a burner kit. .

How long does it take to put up?

The first time your pitch your tent you need to attach the guy ropes, but once they are on they are on for life. You'll also take a while as you get used to it, so allow 1-2 hours for your first attempt. Once you get the hang of it ONE person can do the whole thing in 45-60 minutes. Sure its easier with two people but one person will be able to erect the tent if need be. We are two ladies who developed this product and we often have to put it up on our own. It does require some physical fitness. The 5m is a lot easier with someone helping as the canvas is heavy. The 4m we regularly put up ourselves as its smaller and easier to manage.

There are two methods of putting the tent up - roof first or walls first. It is easier to put the walls up first, but if its raining when you put it up, then roof first is better. Also - if you leave the wall poles in the canvas, you can put it up in 15-20 minutes. Purchase a banana bag for this as it really is an awesome accessory for saving time! Great for people who rent them out as a business.
